Every so often the amazing Mzzz Carrie Ann Baade graces New York City with her presence. What brought her here for this most recent October trip was Pam Grossman of the Phantasmaphile blog, and Observatory, the Gowanus go-to place for curio, vanitas, occult, fantastic and wunderkammer.

Only part of the whole group: Samantha Levin, Lori Field, Catherine Bleck, Heather Gargon, Carrie Ann Baade, Caitlin Hackett

Carrie was here to give a lecture at Observatory on “The Desire to Conceal and Reveal: The Narrative in Art,” wherein she explored artwork by contemporary artists including Julie Heffernan, Kris Kuksi and Barnaby Whitfield amongst others.  More on that to come!

Now, you see, every time Carrie takes a trip to New York, Le Salon des Femmes reunites.  This fourth iteration of the event took place at Lillie’s, a very large and lush bar decorated with a massive amount of Victorian decor, just west of Union Square.  In attendance this year were some familiar faces as well as some new ones: Lori Field, Madeline von Foerster, Carrie Ann Baade, Tina Imel, Hannah von Goeler, Catherine Bleck, Caitlin Hackett, Heather Gargon and yours truly, Samantha Levin.  We exchanged drawings-in-progress, newly published catalogs and, of course, Caity and I showed off the new feature article in Hi Fructose Magazine about her work written by “…rogue jeweler who’s really a painter who’s really a writer,” J. L. Schnabel.

Phantasmaphile‘s Pam Grossman usually makes it out to these lovely gatherings, but she was busy honeymooning.  Or something.  Whatevs.  Check out her awesome wedding cake topper!

Yes, indeed, I should have blogged about Carrie’s eventful visit BEFORE her arrival a month ago to give all of you the opportunity to see/hear her lecture, but I was up to my eyeballs getting ready for Another Roadside Attraction, which is up for the rest of this wonderful year.  Click the link for details.  It is a fantastic exhibition!

Carrie and I in our Laurie Lipton tees. We wanted Laurie to be present in spirit if not in person.
